What Causes Brown Spot Around Mole On Neck?

Hi, i am a 40 year old woman and i have a mole on my neck which is surrounded by a brown spot, its painful and i fear it may be cancerous. What precautions should i take and what medicines would help it to heal? I can post a picture if that would help.
