What Causes Brown Spotting After Missing Depo Shots?

I had a baby six months ago. A month after having him I went on the depo. Since then I've had only one period in the beginning. I've been spotting ever since then , sometimes it's light red , other times it's brown. I never went back in 3 months for my second shot.
