What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge After Discontinuing Depo?

So for the last few months my period has been nothing but brown and sometimes slightly red. I was on the birth control shot (Depo) for 3 months then stopped due to it not working. I am not on any type of birth control at the moment could this be an after effect from it?
