What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge And Delayed Period?

I missed my period in December. I took a test at home and i wasn't pregnant. For the past 4 days I have been having a clotty brown tissue like discharge. I don't know what it is. I'm nervous! This isn't the first time. It has happened before in the past when my period skips a month. Is it a miscarriage?
