What Causes Brownish Bleeding?

I have been on tricyclen lo for 5 years now. I have always taken it at the same time every day (4pm), except this month has been busy with exams and stuff at that time and have not been taking it every day at the same time. For the past two days, I have been bleeding a brownish colour discharge. Could this be hormone levels just inbalanced or something more serious?
