What Causes Brownish Discharge During Menstruation?

I recently stoped my contraceptive pill due to moveing house and having to register with another doc so during this time i wasent able to get it because of christmas hol's etc i have been off it 2 weeks 1st week i was supposed to be due a period on the sunday which never came till the thursday and only lasted till the saturday usually lasts 7days this was also not a normal period as it was like big clots that was that heavy it come right through my towel and leggings, i have also been getting bad cramps and not been able to sleep properly also my stomchs been quiet swollen in the past week not sure if this is why, i had an appointment with family planning yesterday 17th and she just gave me 1years supply of my pill said my blood preasure and weight was fine but i was going to start my pill today till i got home last night to find a blob of gooey clear discharge on my pants when at the toilet i wipped this and there was a smear of blood through the rest of it was fine after that untill today i have had brown spotting not sure whats up should i start my pill again?
