What Causes Brownish Discharge During Menstruation?

i am on my third week of sprintec, although before starting i had about three days of blood but i have had brown disharge which is sometimes light and sometimes dark for the past three weeks to a month. i got checked and my doctor said it was normal, but its been awhile, is this normal?
