What Causes Bruise And Pain In The Needle Prick Site?

A week ago I donated blood. Since then I've developed a pretty serious bruise around the area where the needle was inserted. It feels very uncomfortable and sometimes painful when i try to fully extend my arm. It's only gotten worse throughout the week. What could be wrong?
