What Causes Bruise On Back Of Leg?

i have a small bruise like tender spot about an inch in diameter on the back of my leg halfway between my ankle and knee. It has only just come up but I am not aware of knocking it. When i run my fingers across it I can feel a soft lump underneath. Could you please help?
