What Causes Bruised Nail Bed?

My left thumb outside area of the nail bed has felt like its been bruised, but isn t discolored. When I apply any pressure on or around the outside of the thumb it hurts bad. Three wks or better and hasn t changed. Have tendinitis in elbow, is this related in any way. What will help ease discomfort.
