What Causes Bruises On My Toes?

I have small painful bruises below (not underneath) the nails 4 of my toes on my right foot. The big toe is fine. My toes on my left foot are fine. The bruises look like they're black and blue. They also itch. I did not hurt myself, and I wear the same shoes.
