What Causes Bump At The Back Of Head After An Injury?

My father slipped on ice outside and hit the back of his head. He has a big bump which appeared almost immediately. He said when he initially fell he couldn t get up or move. His pupils look ok. Should we be concerned about a brain injury/concussion??
