What Causes Bump On Toe After An Injury?

I know you can't really do anything about a toe but I hurt my big toe falling on the stairs and there's been this hard bump on my toe like in the middle of it. It was discolored and swollen when it first happened which was five days ago. I still have that hard bump. It's not swollen still and I'm not sure f it's still discolored. What could the bump be? Is it a home? It's hard. And I haven't gotten x-rays yet because I wanna see if I should actually go if something isn't wrong. What could you do for a broken toe anyways?
