What Causes Burning And Itching All Over The Body?

My husband just woke up in the middle of the night with a burning and itching sensation all over his body followed by large and small red bumps everywhere excluding his face. Some are the size of a large gum ball others are tiny. He's done nothing out of the ordinary today. No trouble breathing just burning painful itching at the areas.
