What Causes Burning Sensation And Peeling Of Skin In Knee?

My son got a small burn on his knee at wrestling on Thursday (a mat burn size of a dime). Today it cover his entire knee. The skin has peeled off and if very easy to peel around the edges. Where the skin has peeled off, the knee is red and weeping. Could he have contract some kind of infection?
