What Causes Burning Sensation In Left Testicle Along With Stabbing Pain?

I believe my boyfriend has an inguinal hernia. He has the burning sensation in his left testical, feels stabbing pain in his left side and this all occurred after strenuous activity. My question is if we went to the emergency room tonight, what would they suggest or be able to do for him?
