What Causes Choking In Food Pipe Along With Headaches?
I have been choking when drinking / eating / sometimes just when I talk and seem to inhale saliva (not always but sometimes) . I had an episode last week where I choked (I think on saliva) started coughing had a bad headache (the practitioner said thunderclap (choking and headache stopped) then memory loss for about one hour-- I had CBC chem panel, CT (these three normal) and CT with contrast (which showed a possible aneurysm versus infundibulum?) I have an appointment with a neurologist next week. The CTA report recommended an MRI angiogram (consideration for this) to further define. My mother had a suspected SAH as the cause of her death (She woke up with a headache, asked my father for an aspirin which she received but she never woke up) had xanthochromic fluid in her spinal tap (this was 1980) I just had another choking episode and a mild headache associated with it but no memory loss. She was hypertensive but I don t know what medications she took. I am hypertensive and am taking atenolol 25 mg daily and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 daily with adequate control My question is: what can I do to decrease my choking episodes other than smaller amounts of food and chewing well and taking care in swallowing maybe chin tucks (but I can t seem to control the saliva which seems to get in when I am talking/ laughing) Should I also have an UGI study done? or barium swallow?
