What Causes Choking On Having Food Followed By Hiccups And Belching?

My husband who is 65yrs old keeps choking on his food. The food seems to stick in his esophagitis. He is often sick afterwards and has hiccups & belching for about an hour before he calms down. He is too stubborn to see a doctor. Can you tell me if this serious please.Thank you.
