What Causes Chronic Pain In Sides Of Finger And Toe Nails?

I have chronic pain up the sides of my finger nails as well as my toe nails. it comes and goes but is worse it seems at night or when i am not really doing anything. And i am not really sure you would call it pain it is more of an annoying discomfort. I want to know what causes this and how to prevent it
