What Causes Constant Heavy Bleeding From Vagina?

I had a minera coil fitted 4 years ago and have been fine, occasional spotting one/two days, nothing remarkable. About two weeks ago started bleeding really heavily, eight days later still bleeding. Spoke to GP who prescribed NORETHISTERONE 3 5mg tabs a day until our appointment. What is going on basically?
