What Causes Cough While In Semi Reclined Position?

I have a coughing problem it happens when I sit in a semi reclined position it also happens when sleeping and change position. I ll cough till I cough up flem and it feels like it comes up from deep inside maybe from my lungs. I am a smoker I ve started smoking more in the last few months also.
