What Causes Coughing Up Of Yellowish Sputum?

I have a cough that produce s yellow sputum and has a very foul taste and odor sometime the odor come without the cough. I have had it for several weeks. My doctor thinks its a cold or bronchitis. There is no fever and though the symptoms have lessened it has not stopped.
