What Causes Cracks At The Finger Tips Of A Child?

My 8 year old is allergic to dogs and has asthma. the tips of her fingers are raw-looking and cracked and painful. We do not have any pets, but recently stayed overnight at a house with a dog and two cats. But her fingertips were already a little raw before we went to the house with the dog. Did the dog allergy cause her fingers to crack? How should we treat them?
