What Causes Dark Brown Discharge With An Odor During Menstruation?

I am a healthy 50 year old female. I have been experiencing perimenopause for about 3 or so years now. My periods are fairly regular, although my last one was a week late. It has now been 10 days since the onset and in the past 3 or 4 days, I have been having a dark brown discharge with a very offensive odour. Would this be considered normal or should I see my doctor?
