What Causes Dark Brown Vaginal Discharge?

i had gotten the implanon birth control put in 8 months ago. haven't had a period since then. for the past 2 days i have had this dark brown discharge coming out of my vagina. its not clumpy or chunky, its like smooth paste. please tell me whats wrong.
