What Causes Dark Mole On My Groin?

I have just been to the GP as I have what I think is a new dark brown, slightly raised mole in my groin area. It isn't irreguar in shape and doesn't itch. The GP has referred be to the hospital to have it removed as she said the colour is irregular, I am 42, and it may be a new mole. However she also said she doesn't think it's anything to worry about. I am worried though as she said the referral will be in within two weeks. Is it likely to be skin cancer?
