What Causes Dark Purple Patch On The Side Of The Foot?

My husband had a dark purple patch on the side of his foot..it has been there several months now..it is growing and it now two big patches and moving up towards the ankle..it does not itch at all and it just looks lika bruise but is not.what could this be?
