What Causes Dark Purple Spot On Shaft Of Penis?

i have a question. i was having intercourse yesterday and later that night i noticed i had a dark purple spot that looked like a bruise on the shaft of my penis, when i woke up this morning it had spread a little bit, is this something i should get checked out?
