What Causes Dark Skin On Knuckles?

I have recently noticed that the backs of my hands, especially the knuckles, have become darker than the rest of my hands. My profession causes me to wash my hands several times a day but this isn t new. I have no pain, itching or flaking. They do get extremely dry however, due to all the hand washing. Any suggestions on what may be causing this?
