What Causes Dark Spot On Toe Nail?

While trimming my toenails today i noticed a dark spot on my right big toe nail..could it be a bruise? I hurt it a while ago when someone accidentally sat on it when my toe was under one of the legs of a chair...didnt notice sooner since i had a dark red nail polish
