What Causes Dark Unusual Spotting During The Second Day Of Menstruation?

I am just 44 years old, had one child (now 6 years). I am half way through my menstrual cycle, which is usually like clockwork - however I am experiencing dark, stringy spotting (blood) only seen on the tissue paper after going to the toilet. Now in the second day. Is there an eplanation?
