What Causes Darker Skin Around The Nipples?

i am a 54 year old male and the skin is jet black around my nipples, there is no discharge, What could this be please.

My wife has also been dignosed with very vague increase shadowing in right mid and lower zones may be spurious or old, but it is possible that very early inflammatory changes could be developing.can you please explain what this means margaret ann ward
