What Causes Delayed And Prolonged Periods?

I was about 1, 1 1/2 weeks late for my period then I started to spot. I spotted for about 2 weeks ( Starting off pinkish and slowly progressing to red). THEN I started my period which has been going on for about 2 weeks now. Is this normal because i'm thinking of making an appointment with my GP
