What Causes Delayed Periods With Negative UPT?

Hi, My wife has missed her period and the last period she has was on 14th of April 2011. We have done a home pregnancy test 3-4 days back and it was negative. Can you please suggest. Some times she is having irregular periods the longest of which is late by 15 days
