What Causes Delayed Periods?

i stopped takin my birth control like two months ago my period came on time an everything the last week in april then a week later i started spotting for a few days then it stopped i`ve been having unprotected sex with my boyfriend since then my period for may didnt come on so i took a pregnancy test tuesday but it was negative did i take it to early? am i pregnant?
