What Causes Difficulty In Breathing During Nights?

I am having difficulty breathing with any exertion at all and when I wake up in the morning. I thought I had a cold but I have very little cough now except during the night when I try to sleep; no fever and the mucus I cough is white or clear, not green. I was wondering if there is something I can take to help me get better quicker.
