What Causes Discoloration Of Toe Nail?

Hey my husband has toenail. Discoloration on his big toes it really concerns me and he says they are semi tender but its a red color and looks like a bruise as if it were on your arm..but its red and on his toenails. I've looked up what it could possibly be but no luck as to anything..please help.
