What Causes Discolouration Around Areola?

hi im 57 yr. old woman. this past yr i have been very stressed out. ive even noticed a change of color to my aereola. they faded almost to match my normal skin color. is something wrong? during pap smears and mammograms no one has said anything about them, and i forgot to ask, until i looked in mirror.
