What Causes Discomfort Feeling On Right Side Of Rib Cage?

Hi, my husband has a discomfort outside the rib cage on the right side. It came on suddenly about 2 weeks ago. We can see something raised/bulging under the skin. It extends from under the arm to the bottom of the rib cage. It hurts when he stretches or lays on it. Thank you for your help.
