What Causes Distress And Confusion While Suffering With Viral Encephalitis?

My 55 year old daughter had Viral Encephalitis five years ago. She now have periods of feeling like she is in a blackout but fully conscious and responds to conversation. Afterwards she is very distressed, confused, sad, angry and no memory of what she was previously doing.
