What Causes Excessive Menstrual Bleeding?

I had excessive menustral bleeding while I slept and was woken up by a puddle of blood. I almost fainted when I attempted to walk, felt hot and cold. Since then I have ceased the bleeding with ponstan forte but will exhausted, have pain in my knee. I had cramping too but ponstan forte has stopped it.
