What Causes Excessive Phlegm Build Up In Throat?

I am a 62 year old woman and very healthy. However, it seems the older I become, the more phlegm I battle. Nothing of color, it just seems like my saliva is thicker and it builds up in my throat. Ive noticed old folks clearing their throats a lot, and now, I M DOING THIS. How come?? ????
