What Causes Extra Skin In Vagina?

I have two flaps of extra skin in my vagina. I've had them as long as I can remember and they aren't painful but very occasionally they swell up. I just want to check that there's nothing to be worried about. They're quite big (5cm+) and the colour is darker than the rest of my skin.
