What Causes Extreme Itching On Legs And Arms?

I am experiencing extreme itching mainly on my legs but on my arms and tummy too and after I scratch I get very large bruises. They don't hurt like a bruise you would get by running into something but they are very ugly and alarming to look at, I'm not sure what is causing it or what to do about it.
