What Causes Extreme Swelling In Left Tonsils?

I woke up this morning with my left tonsil extremely swollen, it looks like there is a black spot on it. When I touched it with a qtip it was bloody. I rushed to the doctor and they gave me a penicillin shot in the hip. It does not seem to be getting any better. I can't even swallow my own saliva. I'm not sure how much more pain I can take. I've had a temp of 101.8 all day and my left eat is achey. What should I do?
