What Causes False Negative Home Pregnancy Test Results?

I had two negative home pregnancy tests...missed period at end of January. Missed February period. Had IUD. On Tuesday, went for annual exam, negative test there too. They couldn t find my IUD strings, so they set me up an ultrasound for the next day. Was told I was 12wks pregnant. Why the negative tests?
