What Causes Fever And Cough After Cleaning The Basement?

Hello. I was helping my friend clean his basement and we discovered a large amount of white dust when we pulled up his carpet. We vaccummed it up and tons of the dust was released into the air. We both have fevers and have been coughing constantly. What's up with that?
