What Causes Flaking Of Nails?

my nephew (5 yrs) suffers from flaking of nails whenever he gets any skin problems. He has suffered from hand foot mouth disease during which his nails started flaking terribly. Now whenever he gets any skin problem, his nails start flaking. what is the reason for that??
