What Causes Flare Up Of Lumps Along With Itching?

My wife was bitten about 4-5 years ago and they flared up yesterday and itch her a lot. What might it be? ... and what can we do to stop this recurrence? Apparently. I brought the insects home in our 2nd car after visiting friends upstate. I did learn then that this couple had both contracted lyme disease as they live in a heavily wooded area. One concern is whether these were ticks and not mosquitos. Any suggestions?
