What Causes Hardened Mucus In The Nose?

For the past couple of weeks, my nose has seen a large buildup of hardened mucous. It is sharp and at times extremely painful, and even comes out bloody sometimes. Also, on certain occasions I wake up not being able to breath through my nose because of all of the mucous that has collected and hardened. What could be causing this?
